Biography of Dr. Frederick O. Murph

Dr. Frederick O. MurphDr. Frederick Ormonde Murph is the senior minister of Brookins Community African Methodist Episcopal Church, only the second pastor in the history of the church. Since his appointment in October 1996, Brookins has experienced significant growth, both spiritually and numerically. More than 3,000 people have united with the church during his tenure, including 2,000 converts to Christianity. Also, the Pastor’s Tuesday Night Bible Study attracts 150+ students a week and thousands tune in to his broadcast at 7:30 a.m., every Sunday on KJLH radio-free 102.3FM.

Under Dr. Murph’s leadership, Brookins has renovated and refurbished six of the church’s properties at a cost of 1.8 million dollars.

Dr. Murph has rallied the congregation to reach beyond the church walls to advance the cause of Christ. In 1999, he founded the Brookins Community Development Corporation to make the word “community” in the church name, a “reality” in the lives of the residents in South Central Los Angeles by providing a wide range of much-needed services. That same year, Brookins opened the Maxine Waters Emancipation Home for Women to provide housing and job training for single mothers transitioning from welfare to work; and, the Vernon R. Byrd Child Development Center which offers day care for children between the ages of 2 and 6. And, the Florence Brothers After School Program was opened in November 2001, serving over 200 youth with computer classes, Spanish lessons, tutoring, arts and crafts, and recreational activities. Dr. Murph, along with Attorney Thomas A. Mesereau, Jr., founded the Mesereau-Ephriam-Villaraigosa Free Legal Clinic on April 5, 2006. The free legal clinic provides information and referrals to residents of Southern California.

In recognition of his accomplishments, Dr. Murph has been honored by civic, educational and governmental agencies. He has received commendations from the State of California Department of Education, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the Los Angeles City Council, the City of Oakland, and the Alcorn State Alumni Association – Los Angeles Chapter, and many others too numerous to mention.

Prior to his appointment at Brookins, Dr. Murph served 10 years as pastor of First A.M.E. Church in Oakland, CA, where more than 1,600 people joined the church, and a $1 million rebuilding and renovation of the church was completed following the Loma Prieta Earthquake of 1989. In addition, Dr. Murph led the congregation in building the Anderson-Murph Business Center to provide job training for low income residents, at a cost of $800,000. He also purchased a $300,000 parsonage for the church.

Dr. Murph accepted the call to preach in 1976, and three years later, he was appointed to St. Stephen A.M.E. Church in Elkridge, MD. In 1982, he was pastor of St. Stephen A.M.E. Church in Essex, MD, and led over 200 people to Christ, coordinated major renovations of the edifice, and established a radio ministry.

A native of Los Angeles, Dr. Murph earned Bachelor of Science degrees in Religion and Sociology from The American University; Master’s of Divinity degree from Howard University School of Divinity; and a Doctorate of Humanities degree from Monrovia College in Monrovia, Liberia. Dr. Murph is married Rachel Murph and he is honored and very proud to have a wife that is one-thousand percent dedicated to his calling to serve. He realizes that a good wife is a wonderful gift from God.
